OD Pro Meeting - The Upside of Anger PDF Print E-mail
Could anger and conflict at work be something more than reactions that need to be managed?

Who was it that said that anger expressed is far less costly and damaging to a relationship than indifference?  Whoever it was, the statement makes intuitive sense to most people.

Organisations are rife with situations likely to cause employee anger, including complex relationships, chronic pressure, high stakes, and factors beyond individual control. The importance of anger as a discrete emotion has led to a range of studies exploring its implications in organisations including emotional and cultural norms, leadership, gender issues, status and power, and cross-cultural differences.

As Organisation Development professionals adept in observing the systemic impact of culture, can we also accept our ability to influence the system - that we can change what we notice? We must attend with intent and be aware of our emotional investment in the issue.  In doing so we are more likely to respond in an appropriate way.

Research from varied disciplines of quantum physics to anthropology has shown that the attention of an observer can influence the actor’s behaviour in subtle, but unmistakable ways.  This presents an important point:  if being seen influences behaviour, then there is value in being aware of being seen.

How might we use this truth in our work?

Mike Allen, Managing Partner and Lead Coach at CfOD, will facilitate a discussion to elicit insight and practical applications.
